Artwork by Doug Rentsch In Progress
Because of the popularity of the painting of Jacky Ickx winning the 1968 French GP at Rouen in the wet, I thought I'd do another of Ickx's fine wins in the wet. This time the subject is the his victory in the 1971 Dutch Grand Prix where he dueled all race with another wet weather expert Pedro Rodriguez in the Yardley BRM P160.
With the sketches finished here is the painting moving along.

11/5/09 Update
Some progress but letting it rest for awhile in
order to start some new pieces shown below.

Mark Donohue on his way to victory at the 1973
Watkins Glen Can Am. Most people remember
Donohue's total domination of the 1973 Can Am in
the Porsche 917/30, but few recall the difficulty
he have up to this point. Having failed to win
the first two rounds Mark crashed his primary car
in practice for the Glen Can Am. He won the race
in his almost identical back up car and went on
the win all the remaining Can Am races that year
and the championship. The scene represents the
opening laps of the race, as is he is coming up
the hill from turn 7. It was the first time I
ever saw the 917/30. It seemed to quietly fly up
the hill ahead of it's sound like a fighter jet,
so much faster then anything else on the track
that day.
Color study for a painting of Jo Siffert driving
a Gulf Porsche 908/03 through the carousel at the
Nurburgring during the 1,000K in 1971.
I always liked the 908/03's, typical Porsche, build a car for only two races the Nurburgring and the Targa Florio. It also looked like a miniature 917 Can Am car.

Pencil sketch for a painting of the last Targa
Florio in 1973.
The Ferrari 312P's of Jacky Ickx and Arturo Merzario qualified first and second for the last championship race run on the famous Sicilian curcuit, but some felt that Rolf Stommelen in the new 12 cylinder Alfa Romeo 33TT12 sandbagged a little in qualifing.
He did, starting third behind the Ferrari's (the race was started by flagging each car off every 30 seconds) he caught and passed both of them on the first lap. He led the race and pitted to hand the car over to co-drive Andrea de Adamich. It was then that Rolf learned that both Ferrari's had dropped out. It appeared to be smooth sailing for the Alfa team to an easy win, but de Adamich crashed while lapping a slower car, so the win went to a Porsche 911.
I always thought that racing 3 liter prototypes on those open roads was crazy and I wanted to do a painting of the last time it was done.
